Competitors in today's The Ogden Newspapers 20K Classic inspire awe among many spectators who simply cannot imagine being able to finish such a grueling race. But another Classic event - the Torch Relay held on Friday afternoon - brings with it an even more profound feeling of humility.
It is appropriate that the very first event of the Classic, held each year on Memorial Day weekend, is the Torch Relay. The event honors men and women who have served or are serving in the United States armed forces.
Many of them take part in the relay. Some are young, veterans of service in recent times. Others are older; they include those who served us during World War II.
In watching them pass, one gets much the same impression felt in watching competitors in the 20K race: These are strong, iron-willed men and women.
But other thoughts cross the mind in watching the Torch Relay participants: What patriotic, steadfast men and women they are! Thoughts of the sacrifices they made for us all bring tears to the eyes of some who watch them pass.
May the Lord bless and keep them all. And may they understand how heartfelt, if inadequate, are our feelings of gratitude.
